Leslie McFarland
Fitness Board Liaison
We moved here in 2006 and love SunRiver and the Residents. I immediately got involved with the fitness programs. Because of using our fitness opportunities, my physical health has been a blessing. I understand the benefits of participating. I care deeply about the Residents in our community and want to make sure this is a place where everyone feels comfortable, engaged, and heard. If you have suggestions for improvements, activities, or new classes you’d like to see offered, please share them with me. Your ideas are always welcome and appreciated. I look forward to this new position and receiving input from you at FitnessLiaison@SunRiverStGeorge.com. I appreciate your support.

Food and Beverage Liaison
I started my career in Food Service at the ripe old age of 17, cooking lunch at the Hula Hut in Pico Rivera California.
While in Viet Nam during my Navy days, I often cooked meals for my crew. The food provided by the ships cooks was not what you would call prepared with love. My men would
complain and I would spend some time in the kitchen to raise their moral.

After I returned to civilian life, I worked three jobs to support my family while I attended school. One of those jobs was as a bouncer in a local Steakhouse/Bar. I often was asked to
help in the kitchen during the dinner hours.
My real career came after these experiences, where I spent 35 years in the Surgical Devices industry. While doing this I became a consultant doing operating room design in new hospitals. Did I mention I studied Architecture? At one point I became involved in commercial kitchen design on two different hospitals.
I have always enjoyed cooking, but that is not enough to be successful in the food service industry. After leaving my job as a sale trainer and marketing
manager in a major medical supply company, my wife and I purchased a dysfunctional campground in Montana and developed a very successful RV Resort. As part of our resort, we operated a Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor.
We loved the life we created, but the time came to retire.

Retire is a funny word, and I guess I have never quite figured it out. We selected St. George as our new home, and SunRiver was the end result. Soon after we settled, we attended the St. George Temple. They had a small cafeteria; it was destined for closure. That did not seem like a good idea to me. After a few conversations I found myself as the breakfast chef. I loved what I was doing, but eventually the temple was shut down and the Kitchen was closed. I then met some folks with a small dinner called Dede’s, and they were desperate for help. I didn’t have much to do, so I spent a couple of years helping them get their business on its feet.
I also volunteered as the Sunday chef at Spring Gardens Assisted living for a while. Some of you may have experienced my work at the South Gate Golf Course Grill. Along the way, I mixed my business background with my Food Service experience and did some consulting. Some of it was with smaller Restaurants and some with major national chains.
